Norma Gibson: Ex-wife of Tyrese Gibson who relied on child support after he divorced her
As humans, we always vote for love to win. However, some people just don’t get their happy ending. That was the case in Tyrese and Norma Gibson’s marriage.
Unfortunately, separation was only the beginning of a downhill spiral, as their relationship escalated to a heated court battle. How did it come to this? That’s what we aim to cover in this post.
Norma Gibson’s Early Life
Despite being the ex-wife of a celebrity, we don’t know much about Norma Gibson’s life before marrying Tyrese Gibson.
We know she was born on the 1st of March, 1981, in London, making her 42 at the time we’re writing this post. We also know she’s 5’ 6” and weighs around 117 lbs.

As we’ve already mentioned, Norma didn’t gain public recognition until she married Tyrese Gibson. That was natural given that he’s a big celebrity.
Tyrese is a jack of all trades. He’s a well-known name in the music industry, making songs that would become certified platinum and gold.
He’s famous for his role in the “Fast and Furious” franchise. He also appeared in various other movies, like “Baby Boy,” “Legion,” and “Death Race.”
Tyrese has several contributions outside the entertainment industry, though. He’s published “How to Get Out of Your Own Way,” a meditation on identity and redefining one’s self. He also co-wrote “Manology,” which tackles various life and relationship lessons.
Despite having a fulfilling career filled with incredible achievements, we can’t say that Tyrese’s relationship with Norma was as successful.
Norma Gibson’s Marriage
Norma met Tyrese in 2002 when she was still a student, and they hit it off immediately. Shortly after they started dating, Tyrese asked Norma to move in with him to Los Angeles, and she agreed.
After a few years of dating, Norma discovered she was pregnant with Tyrese’s child, and so they decided to tie the knot. In 2007, the couple had a happy marriage and went on to live the rest of their lives together—or so it seemed.
Strangely enough, they kept their marriage hidden from the public eye. No one knew how the newly married couple was doing, which foreshadowed what happened next.
Norma Gibson’s Divorce
In 2009, Norma and Tyrese announced their divorce to the world. That was shocking news, as their marriage had been too short. However, both individuals were mature about the separation and seemed willing to work together to care for their daughter, Shyla.
Unfortunately, Norma’s relationship with her ex-husband wouldn’t stay that way for long. In 2015, Norma took to the media to explain why she and her husband separated. She accused Tyrese of being physically and emotionally abusive.
She even claimed that he physically assaulted their daughter. Norma decided to call Tyrese out after knowing that professional football player Ray Rice was involved in a domestic violence incident.
She wanted to uplift domestic violence survivors, helping them feel heard and encouraging them to tell their stories, too. Eventually, Norma decided to take Tyrese to court.
Upon learning that Tyrese had hired a private investigator to watch his daughter and ex-wife, the court gave Norma temporary custody of Shyla. It also granted her a restraining order against Tyrese.
In reaction to these claims, Gibson confessed that he only struck Shyla’s bottom once, but he stated to have never laid a hand on Norma.
Norma Gibson’s Custody Battle Against Her Husband
Trying to get full custody of Shyla led to a chaotic court battle. Besides accusing Tyrese of physical and emotional abuse, Norma also claimed he’s bipolar. She said he constantly got into fights with others and forced her to keep his physical violence a secret.
Tyrese’s reply to these claims was aggressive. He stated in an interview that he only married Norma to keep her in the U.S. Since she was from London, he didn’t want his daughter to live in another country with her mother.
A few months into this battle, the court granted both parents equal custody. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of the story. They met in court again because Shyla wanted to participate in extracurricular activities.
Her father didn’t approve because he thought her academic performance still needed work. Norma, on the other hand, thought it was good enough and was supportive of Shyla engaging in school plays and sports. Eventually, the court sided with Norma.
Norma Gibson’s Career
We don’t know if Norma had a job before dating/marrying Tyrese. However, we know she refused to find one during her court battle.
Although the child support deal required her to get a job to support her daughter, Norma said living life is her job. She also said she’s working on her life, she’s working on her book, and she runs errands at home.

We know next to nothing about Norma Gibson outside her marriage to Tyrese Gibson. While their relationship started out well, it quickly went downhill, with both parties fighting a messy court battle for full custody of Shyla.
