Leftover Candy Cane Ideas!

January 7, 2011 By Crumbs and Chaos

Spread the love
A candy cane at Christmas is always a treat.  We eat them and we decorate with them, but what do you do when you have so many of them leftover after the holidays??  This past Christmas I had some leftover at our house and was also given a bag of leftover candy canes from my mother-in-law!  So I had two options…  I could either let Jonah devour them all or I could find a few alternative things to do with them.

Then I turned to my friend, Google, and found quite a few creative things.  There is always the idea to use them to stir your hot chocolate or coffee.  Or you could make Chocolate Peppermint Marshmallows  or Peppermint Bark.  But here are a few that I had never heard of that seemed interesting.  These would also be great ideas to use for Valentines Day!

 1.  CANDY CANE HEARTS

Place parchment paper on a cookie sheet.  Then place two unwrapped candy canes together to form a heart.  Place in an oven, at 350 degrees, until ends have been melted together.  Just don’t leave them in too long or they will melt completely(trust me, I know!).  Let cool.  You then have a candy cane heart which would be perfect to place on the top of a cake or cupcake or to enjoy with your sweetheart!

2.  A SWEET AND SOUR TREAT

This one seemed kinda silly but ended up being kinda tasty.  Start by snapping the hook off of the candy cane so that you have a peppermint stick.  Then cut a hole in the side of a lemon.  Stick one end in the lemon and begin sucking on the other end of the peppermint stick.  The acid from the lemon will eat away at the center of the stick creating a straw.  It is an interesting mix of sweet and sour!

 3.  STAIN GLASS COOKIES

Typically these cookies are made with a clear hard colored candy, such as Jolly Ranchers, but the candy canes worked just as well!

Ingredients
-6 CANDY CANES, crushed
-SUGAR COOKIE DOUGH (I used store bought, but you could make your own)

Directions
Roll out dough and create circle cookies.  Then with a small heart cookie cutter, cut out the center of each cookie.  Place cookies on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.  Fill the center of each cookie with a tablespoon of crushed candy cane.  Bake at 350 degrees until edges are golden brown.  Let them cool for 5 minutes on the cookie sheet then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.  ENJOY!

Those cookies are precious! I also love the idea of the candy cane hearts. 🙂
