It’s easy to run out of time, especially during the holidays. If you need a treat that you can make from start to finish in about a half an hour…this is the one.
And it’s absolutely addictive.
My mother-in-law would whip this up before we came to visit and it didn’t last long after we arrived. Everyone loves it, my favorite part is the caramel-y covered cereal…I could add nothing else and just eat that. But all the rest makes for a great combo of sweet and salty.
It’s simple to make, remember to ask for a large paper bag when you are at your local grocery store. You will be noshing on sweet, salty goodness in no time. I know it will be hard, but please try to save some for your family and friends!
Sweet & Salty Snack Mix
12.8 oz. box RICE CHEX CEREAL
8 oz. PRETZELS
1 jar DRY ROASTED PEANUTS
1 medium size bag CHRISTMAS M&Ms
2 sticks BUTTER
1 1/3 cups BROWN SUGAR
1/3 cup LIGHT CORN SYRUP
1/2 teaspoon BAKING SODA
Mix cereal and pretzels in a large bowl, set aside.
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, brown sugar and corn syrup. Bring to a boil. Boil for 4 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, add baking soda.
Pour syrup mixture over cereal and pretzels. Stir.
Dump into large paper grocery bag. Put into microwave, heat for 1 minute.
Shake bag, heat another minute. Add peanuts. Shake bag, heat another minute.
Spread on waxed paper. Cool and add M&Ms.
Recipe source: My mother-in-law, when she makes this at harvest time she adds candy corn too.
I really love the idea of giving this in a glass jar. It’s so simple with a ribbon, but it’s great because it’s easy to transport (you’re not going to crush it by setting something else on top of it) and the jars are reusable and reasonably priced.
