Simple Doughnuts!

July 23, 2010 By Crumbs and Chaos

Spread the love
Whenever I am in the kitchen Jonah always wants to help. As an almost 2-year old, his biggest thing these days is to be a helper. He loves the idea that he is being a part of what you are doing. I first made this recipe a few years ago, before he was born, but at the thought of it I knew it was something he could help with and that he would love to eat! It uses only a few ingredients, is very inexpensive, and is SO good!! In our house they are quickly devoured!!!

DOUGHNUTS

Ingredients
-1 pkg of refrigerated biscuits
-Vegetable oil
-Topping of your choice: We use powdered sugar or a cinnamon sugar mix

Directions
1. Open package of biscuits and place each biscuit on a flat surface.

2. Using a small circle, create a hole in the middle of each biscuit. I have a deep frying thermometer that has a cover that happens to be the perfect size to create the holes. Just make sure to save the center of each biscuit to make into doughnut holes.

3. In a frying pan, heat the vegetable oil (about 1 1/2 cups depending on the size of your pan). You don’t want the biscuits to be covered when inserted in the oil. The oil should be hot before you put the biscuits in. You can test the oil by sticking the end of a wooden spoon into the pan, if it bubbles, it is ready. Then add the biscuits letting them brown on one side, flipping them and letting them brown on the other side. Remove from the oil and place on a cooling rack.

4. When you have removed all of the doughnuts, it is time to toss them in the sugar. Put them in the bowl of sugar, one at a time and flip, making sure to cover all sides. If you are doing this with little ones (or husbands!) beware because they may be gone before you get them all sugared!! ENJOY!!!

Variation:
If jelly doughnuts are more your thing, try this! Instead of cutting the hole in the center of each biscuit, fry them as is. Then when they are finished, stick a knife in the side of the donuts to create a hole to place the jelly. Place your favorite jelly or jam in a baggie and clip the corner. Then place that corner in the hole and squeeze the jelly into the doughnut. After you are finished, you can still cover these with sugar or powdered sugar, if you wish.
